KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing stunned Taiwan's world No. 17 Sung Shuo Yun-Yu Cien Hui to advance to the second round at the Indonesia Masters on Tuesday.
The unseeded Malaysians, ranked world No. 66, recorded a 21-16, 22-20 victory at the Istora Senayan Stadium.
Pei Kee-Mei Xing will face India's Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa or Thailand's Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn-Sukitta Suwachai in the next round.
This victory is a timely boost for Pei Kee-Mei Xing as their future in the national team hinges on an evaluation by women's doubles coach Rosman Razak, who is assessing their recent performances.
Currently, only national No. 1 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are guaranteed to remain in the national team.
While Pei Kee-Mei Xing's Malaysia Super 100 triumph last year strengthens their case, they must produce consistent results at higher-level tournaments to confirm their spot.
In the men's doubles, seventh seeds Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun cruised into the second round with a 21-19, 21-14 win over China's world No. 80 Sun Wen Jun-Zhu Yi Jun in just 29 minutes.
World No. 13 Wei Chong-Kai Wun started the year on a high note, reaching the Malaysia Open Super 1000 semi-finals two weeks ago, but suffered a first-round exit at the India Open last week to India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty.
They will next take on Japan's Kazuki Shibata-Naoki Yamada or Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen.
