KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia celebrated another upset at the Indonesia Masters on Tuesday when rising men's doubles stars Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King stunned world No. 7 pair Lee Jhe Huei-Yang Po Hsuan in the first round.
Arif-Roy King recorded a 21-17, 21-19 win over the Taiwanese pair at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta.
The win is a huge boost for the Malaysian pair, who had a slow start to the season.
They suffered a first-round exit at the season-opening Malaysia Open and were eliminated in the second round of last week's India Open.
Arif-Roy King will face Taiwan's Chiang Chien Wei-Wu Hsuan Yi or Indonesian veterans Hendra Setiawan-Mohammad Ahsan in the second round.
Earlier in the women's doubles, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing pulled off a shock win against Taiwan's world No. 17 Sung Shuo Yun-Yu Cien Hui, prevailing 21-16, 22-20 in the opening round.
Compatriots Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong also advanced to the men's doubles second round after battling past world No. 42 Rahmat Hidayat-Yeremiah Rambitan of Indonesia 21-14, 19-21, 21-18 in 58 minutes.
Hang Yee-Eng Cheong will next face top seeds Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto of Indonesia or Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard of Denmark.
