Fadhil sees a golden show by Azizul at Tokyo Olympics

NATIONAL track cyclist Fadhil Zonis believes that Azizulhasni Awang will deliver the nation's first-ever Olympic gold medal at this year's Tokyo Games.

However, it would not be a straight forward affair for Azizulhasni in Tokyo as he will have to beat the likes of Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands for the keirin title.

Last March, Lavreysen was unstoppable at the Berlin World Championships, winning the sprint and keirin events, while Azizulhasni finished third in both disciplines.

The Dutch team sprint squad is also chock-full of top-class riders that include 2018 keirin world champion, Matthijs Buchli.

Fadhil, however, has a gut feeling Azizulhasni will pull it off in Tokyo.

"I believe in my teammate. I know he (Azizulhasni) can do it," said Fadhil.

"Anything is possible at the Olympics. However, he will have to go into the games prepared in all aspects."

Besides the Dutch, Brit Jason Kenny, who has kept a low profile since winning three gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is also expected to be a threat.

Azizulhasni won the keirin bronze at the Rio Olympics before becoming world champion in the same discipline in 2017.
