Quintero moves up GC after seventh stage

Terengganu Cycling Team's (TSG) Carlos Quintero (pic) produced a solid performance in the penultimate stage (stage seven) of the Tour of Rwanda on Saturday.

The Colombian all-rounder moved up one spot to eighth in the general classification (GC) after coming in ninth in the 4.5-kilometre individual time trial stage in Kigali in six minutes and 39 seconds.

Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec's Jhonatan Restrepo took the stage win on 6:27s while Wildlife Generation Pro Cycling's Alex Hoehn (+1s) and B&B Hotels p/b KTM's Alan Boileau (+2s) came in second and third, respectively.

TSG's Artem Ovechkin (+24s), Metkel Eyob (+41s), Nur Aiman Zariff (+53s) and Goh Choon Huat (+1:29s) all finished out of the top 20.

Quintero, 35, still has an outside chance of finishing on the GC podium as he is only one minute (+60s) down on yellow jersey holder Christian Rodriguez (Team Total Direct Energie). Restrepo and Israel Start-Up Nation's James Piccoli are second and third in the GC (both +5s).

The riders completed the eighth and final stage around Mount Kigali late yesterday.

TSG's Eyob was briefly in charge of the yellow jersey but lost it after crashing during a descent in stage six on Friday.

Quintero, who joined TSG last year, will be retiring after the race as he is moving into a presenting role with a cycling channel.
