TSG ace ends up in hospital

Terengganu Cycling Team's (TSG) Carlos Quintero ended the Tour of Rwanda in the back of an ambulance after crashing in the final stage on Sunday.

It was all going to plan for Quintero, who was eighth (+60s) in the general classification (GC) going into the eighth stage, as he was among the front runners just before the hors class climb to the finish.

However, he crashed on a slippery cobbled section together with several other riders and was forced to abandon the race.

He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.

TSG's Artem Ovechkin (+4:44s), Metkel Eyob (+13:25s) and Nur Aiman Zariff (+15:08s) all finished the stage out of the top 30.

Team Total Direct Energie's Christian Rodriguez, who took the yellow jersey from Eyob on stage six, won the 75.3km stage in 2:05:06s and subsequently secured the overall victory at the Tour of Rwanda.

Israel Start-Up Nation's James Piccoli finished second (+17s) overall while Wildlife Generation Pro Cycling's Alex Hoehn took third (+50s) in the GC.

Following Quintero's failure to complete the race, Eyob emerged as the highest-placed TSG rider at 29th (+17:58s).

TSG lead coordinator Sharonjane Liau said it was an unfortunate end to what has been a treacherous outing in Rwanda.

Eyob and Ovechkin had both crashed in the wet conditions during stage six.

"Quintero was at the front of the group (in the last stage) when he approached the final climb.

"However, he fell on the cobblestone pavement with a few others in the rain. It was very slippery," said Sharonjane.

"It is unfortunate because Quintero told me in the ambulance that he was feeling good at the time (just prior to the crash).

"Thankfully, he has not suffered any fractures.

"Nonetheless, we had a good run in the first half of the tour. We had two podiums — second on stage three (Quintero) and third on stage five (Eyob)

"I am proud of the team for their work in the race, although it was not the ending that all of us wanted."

The UCI 2.1 tour was Quintero's last race with TSG as he is moving into a presenting role with a cycling channel.

The 35-year-old joined TSG last season.
