Azizulhasni still eager to ride for country

TRACK cyclist Azizulhasni Awang wants to continue representing the nation until the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 33-year-old said his motivation and desire to represent Malaysia at the Olympics remain as strong as ever.

"The plan has always been to continue until the Paris Games," said Azizulhasni upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang yesterday.

"But as usual, after every major competition, I will sit down with national coach John Beasley and the team to discuss our plans.

"I still have that burning desire, and I am also free from any physical issues."

Azizulhasni emerged as a hero for Malaysia on Sunday when he delivered a silver medal in the keirin event.

Tokyo was Azizulhasni's fourth Olympics after previous appearances at the 2008 (Beijing), 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio) editions.

Meanwhile, Azizulhasni disclosed that he plans to return to his village in Dungun, Terengganu, to meet his father Awang Embong, 72, once he has completed his 14-day quarantine.

His father recently suffered a mild stroke.

"The first thing I want to do after quarantine is to see my father who is not well and my mother," Azizulhasni added.

Azizulhasni also expressed his gratitude to all Malaysians who had supported him and the national contingent throughout their Tokyo Olympic campaign.
