Sprinters in good form for podium

Track sprinters Fadhil Zonis and Shah Firdaus Sahrom have made great strides in recent seasons, and the UCI World Championships, which starts in France today, will present an opportunity for both riders to prove their mettle.

National track cycling coach John Beasley said he is pleased with their preparations and confident both riders will fight for podium positions at the Stab Velodrome in Roubaix.

"I am pretty excited and happy with their form," said Beasley recently.

"It has been a long season for everyone. For Fadhil, he was our emergency (backup) for the Tokyo Olympics, and although he did not go to Japan, he kept on training hard.

"Fadhil earned some small rewards in Hong Kong (UCI Nations Cup), which was a bonus for his hard work. He is now ready for the next step.

"I am confident Fadhil will stand on the podium in Roubaix. In the next couple of years, I believe he will be on the top step of the podium.

"This is just the start of a long process to get him to that top step."

Fadhil, the Asian record holder in the 1km time trial, raised eyebrows when he scalped several big names en route to the keirin gold at the Hong Kong Nations Cup in May.

The 23-year-old won silver in the 1km time trial at the same meet.

Beasley added that he is equally optimistic of Shah's chances in France.

Shah's outing in Tokyo was hampered by a crash during the opening round of the keirin.

However, the 25-year-old still managed to reach the quarter-finals despite suffering cuts and bruises from the crash.

"With Shah, I think there is no reason he can't win a medal in the sprint. He also has a chance of winning the keirin," said Beasley.

"He just has to back himself and execute well.

"He has held his form wonderfully well. I expected a bit of a drop off (after Tokyo), but it has not been to the extent that I had anticipated."

Fadhil and Shah will ride in the keirin tomorrow and the individual sprint on Saturday and Sunday.

Fadhil will also compete in Friday's 1km time trial.

Beasley will not be making the trip to Roubaix due to Australia's travel restrictions.

Beasley's trusted lieutenant Harnizam Basri will be in charge in France.

The absence of several big guns, including Malaysia's Azizulhasni Awang, should brighten the duo's chances of finishing on the podium.

Azizulhasni, who has returned to the national elite squad's training base in Melbourne, opted to sit out after a gruelling Olympic cycle.

"I believe Shah and Fadhil are ready to carry this huge responsibility for the nation," said Azizulhasni in a social media post.

"After looking at the entry list of riders, I only have one piece of advice for both cyclists — make sure you guys reach the finishing line first."

Britain's Jason Kenny, who won the keirin gold in Tokyo, is also not competing in France.
