Joo Ngan leading candidate for Phnom Penh mission

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) have not ruled out the possibility of roping in cycling great Datuk Ng Joo Ngan to once again guide the road squad at next year's Phnom Penh Sea Games.

MNCF vice-president Firdaus Arshad said the national body had yet to finalise the head coach (road) position.

Joo Ngan had served as head coach during the Hanoi Sea Games in May, where the road squad won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

"We have yet to decide on the (road squad) head coach position because the coaches are focusing on the Malaysia Games," Firdaus said.

"They are tied to contracts with their respective state sports councils. We will speak to them after the Malaysia Games (which will be held between Sep 16 and 24).

"Joo Ngan's planning for the Hanoi Sea Games was a success.

"He was able to bring together (riders and coaches) from Team Sapura Cycling and Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) to work together as a tight unit.

"In terms of experience and tactical planning, Joo Ngan is the right person. However, the planning has to be done together (with everyone involved), so we will have to see how things go."

Earlier this year, Joo Ngan disclosed that his main priority for the Hanoi Sea Games was to get everyone involved on the same page.

The 2019 Manila road squad, which suffered from internal issues, had returned home empty-handed.

It is understood that Joo Ngan is focusing on Federal Territories' preparations for the Malaysia Games.

Firdaus said the National Sports Council had set a three-gold target for the road and mountain bike squad in Cambodia.
