Shah Firdaus to battle Richardson in sprint q-final decider

CYCLIST Shah Firdaus Sahrom continued his good form after taking the keirin bronze on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a run to the quarter-finals of the men's individual sprint event today.

Shah defeated New Zealand's Sam Dakin in his opening-round heat at the Lee Valley VeloPark to advance to the last eight.

He lost his first race to Aussie Matthew Richardson but won his second in the best-of-three quarterfinals.

The deciding race was held later in the day.

Earlier, Shah clocked 9.846 seconds to place seventh among 26 riders in the qualifying round.

His brother Ridwan Sahrom (10.226s) and Fadhil Zonis (10.310s) were placed 20th and 21st and did not make the top-16 cut for the first round.

There were no surprises as Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul, the keirin champion, topped the qualifiers on 9.445s.
