Wan rides against big names

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Polygon Cycling Team's (TSG) up-and-coming sprinter Wan Abdul Rahman Hamdan had an eye-opening experience at the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium on Sunday.

The field featured cycling royalty such as Chris Froome, Vincenzo Nibali, current Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard and legendary sprinter Mark Cavendish.

Wan, earmarked as a possible replacement for Harrif Saleh in the future, said it was an honour to race against them.

"I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to race here.

"It is not every day you get to race against World Tour riders, so this was definitely a new experience for me.

"I tried to fight for some of the intermediate sprint points but it was not possible, it was a very fast race."

Cavendish, as expected, took the points classification while Vingegaard, Froome and Nibali placed 1-2-3 after a successful breakaway two laps before the end of the race.

Zamri Saleh, 39, was placed seventh, just a spot behind Cavendish.

Wan and Goh Choon Huat arrived in the same group.

The 23-year-old Wan placed third in stage five of the Tour of Thailand last year. He also won the men's criterium gold for Terengganu at the Malaysia Games last month.
