Msian Embassy overseeing Luqman's Belgium move

THE Malaysian Embassy in Belgium will leave no stone unturned to ensure striker Luqman Hakim Shamsudin completes his transfer to Belgian Division One club KV Kortrijk (KVK), next month.

Chargé d'affaires a.i. Prisheela Prakas said the embassy would work to remove any possible hurdle in Luqman's way.

She will also get her officials to liaise with the Belgian club, owned by Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

The priority is to facilitate the visa process and work permit of the 18-year-old player. Luqman is likely to be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

"Our official is already in touch with Luqman's representative in Kuala Lumpur," said Prisheela yesterday.

"It is our responsibility to help Malaysians in any way, especially with regard to conforming to Belgian laws and procedures.

"In Luqman's case, the embassy will collaborate with KVK. We are also working hand-in-hand with our Belgian counterparts in KL.

"The process involves the Immigration Department in Belgium. There are specific protocols to follow. Most of the communication will be between the club and the relevant Belgian authorities.

"We have helped Malaysians in certain matters in other sectors. Now it is Luqman's turn."

Luqman had earlier obtained from the Malaysian government the Certificate of Good Behaviour to fly to Belgium.

He is still training with Selangor II though the FA of Selangor have made an official statement, releasing Luqman on July 4.

Prisheela also spoke about how proud she is to have a Malaysian donning club colours in Belgium, who are ranked No 1 in the Fifa world rankings.

She expressed confidence Luqman would blaze the trail for other Malaysian players to ply their trade in Europe.

"This is an excellent effort to commercialise our national players on the international stage.

"We are very proud and excited to help Luqman become the first Malaysian player in the Belgian league.

"Belgium's borders aren't fully opened yet. However, they have made certain exceptions, like for diplomats. Luqman's case is also considered special," she said.
