FAM rubbishes report Malaysia pulling out of World Cup

THE FA of Malaysia (FAM) dismissed yesterday a report by a Cambodian news portal that the national team will pull out from the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and AFF Suzuki Cup.

FAM secretary-general Stuart Ramalingam, in a statement, said the report on cambodiafootballnews.com, was not true.

"We, at FAM, do not have any plans to withdraw from any of the stated competitions," he said yesterday.

The report claimed that Malaysia planned to withdraw due to the Covid-19 pandemic which had affected the national team's preparations.

Earlier, Fifa and the Asian Football Confederation decided to postpone the 2022 World Cup/2023 Asian Cup qualifiers due to Covid-19.

The postponed matches include Malaysia's Group G games, previously scheduled against the United Arab Emirates on Oct 8, Vietnam (Oct 13) and Thailand (Nov 17).

The 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup has been rescheduled from April 11 to May 8 next year.
