Young Tigers are back

YOUNG Tigers, also known as FAM-NSC Project squad, will return to the M-League next season.

The team will comprise players from the National Football Development Programme (NFDP).

It is a move to prepare a solid team for the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers and also guarantee enough playing time for those with no teams.

Young Tigers last played in the M-League in 2012 before it was disbanded in 2015.

The project squad, comprising 30 Under-20 players, will play in the Premier League next season.

FA of Malaysia (FAM) assistant technical director Datuk Ong Kim Swee said the main objective is to prepare the best youth players in the country for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"We will prepare the Under-20 players accordingly for the Olympic qualifiers.

"They will play in the Premier League and also in international tournaments ahead of the challenge.

"We hope these players can produce results within two or three years by playing against quality opponents.

"When I was coaching Young Tigers, we managed a few good results against teams with foreign players. I believe this squad can do the same," said Kim Swee.

Former Kelantan coach Yusri Che Lah has been handed the job to guide the team.

Yusri, 44, will hold trials at the Academy Mokhtar Dahari in Gambang today to select players.

He will be assisted by Noor Zaidi Rahmatas, Hamsani Ahmad and Nor Ikhmar Madarsa with the support of the National Sports Institute (NSI).

Apart from Gambang, Yusri will also conduct trials in Terengganu (Dec 13-14), Melaka (Dec 15-16), Bukit Jalil (Dec18-19) and Kedah (Dec 21-22).

The final selection will be held in Bukit Jalil on Jan 7-9.

Those selected will be based in Bukit Jalil and will be given the necessary support, including allowances.

NFDP graduates who have signed for teams in the Super League and Premier League are also welcome but subject to their performance and understanding with their employers.

FAM formed the Young Tigers team in 2007, and it turned out to be a successful venture as Malaysia were champions in the 2009 and 2011 Sea Games and the 2010 AFF Cup.

Among those who came out from the system were Mahali Jasuli, Wan Zack Nor Haikal, Shakir Ali and Muslim Ahmad.
