Christmas misery for Luqman

Belgium-based footballer Luqman Hakim Shamsudin hopes the AFC Under-19 Championship in March will go ahead.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) are to decide soon whether to call off the tournament in Uzbekistan following the cancellation of the Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

Fifa made the decision on Thursday due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The AFC Under-19 was supposed to serve as a qualifier for the Under-20 World Cup.

The KV Kortrijk forward said he had found out about the World Cup cancellation when he was out buying groceries on Christmas day.

"I got the news from someone who sent me the link on Whatsapp. Everyone is disappointed, and hopefully, the AFC tournament will still go on.

"We are eager to don national colours in March.

"Of course, I am also disappointed that the World Cup has been called off. We were eager to create history for Malaysia by qualifying for it through the AFC Under-19 tournament.

"It is just not meant to be, but I hope the next batch of players will work hard and try to qualify for the Under-20 World Cup in 2023."

The AFC have yet to state on whether the Under-19 Championship will go ahead.

"We will need to refer to our competitions committee before finalising the next course of action. I believe a decision will come in a week or two," said AFC general secretary Datuk Windsor Paul.
