Mysterious duo from Europe for Malaysia?

Not many in the Malaysian football fraternity are aware of this. Two youngsters, from England and Germany, could play for the national Under-19 team.

The duo are not known in Malaysia, and the FA of Malaysia (FAM) have yet to release their names.

But if things go according to plans, the mystery duo will be among the new faces when coach Brad Maloney holds a national under-19 training camp.

FAM, who started a programmme to recruit naturalised players two years ago to strengthen the national team, could include players from abroad in preparation for the Hanoi Sea Games and AFC Under-23 qualifiers this year.

FAM's scouting department have been building up a database of players, locally and abroad, to be considered for the national teams.

Often when a player with amcestral links to Malaysia does well abroad, netizens put up alerts on social media about them.

And football agents have also been known to recommend foreign players to FAM for naturalisation.

It is understood that Australian coach Maloney is looking at the two "foreign youngsters" for the national Under-19 team.

When asked, Maloney declined to reveal much about the duo but said he is looking to hold a training camp on May 22-June 13.

It is learnt that Penang FC may host a mini competition involving Maloney's boys during the M-League break.

Maloney said he would not call up Luqman Hakim Shamsudin as the Belgium-based striker will be reporting to coach Tan Cheng Hoe for the senior national squad.

FAM have decided to send the national Under-19 team to this year's Sea Games in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

For the 2019 Sea Games in the Philippines, FAM opted for the national Under-23 side who got knocked out in the preliminary rounds following defeats to the hosts and Cambodia.
