Coach Osmera urges Under-16 team to draw inspiration from 'big brothers'

KUALA LUMPUR: National Under-16 coach Osmera Omaro hopes his players will draw inspiration from their Under-19 counterparts, who won the AFF youth title last month, when they start their campaign in the Asean Championship in Indonesia tomorrow.

"We are quite prepared for the competition and hope to channel the energy from the national Under-19 team's success when we start our campaign," said Osmera today.

Malaysia, who won the tournament in 2013 and 2019, are in Group C and will open against Cambodia at Maguwoharjo Stadium in Sleman tomorrow.

Australia and Myanmar make up the group.

Indonesia has been a happy hunting ground for Malaysian teams with victories in the 2010 AFF Cup, 2011 Sea Games and the 2019 and 2022 AFF Under-19 Championship.

"It is just a coincidence that Malaysian teams have won a few competitions in Indonesia. If we play to our capacity, we will succeed," he added.

Malaysia will complete their Group C campaign against Myanmar on Friday and Australia on Aug 8.
