National Stadium to host FA Cup final?

KUALA LUMPUR: Is the National Stadium, closed for pitch restoration, in Bukit Jalil a suitable venue for the FA Cup final between Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Terengganu?

The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have yet to finalise the date for the final.

According to a source, both teams want the final to be played at a neutral venue.

The National Stadium came under scrutiny during the Asian Cup qualifier in June.

The qualifier between Malaysia and Bahrain on June 11 garnered attention worldwide and painted a negative picture of the venue.

Videos and photos of stadium staff using dustpans and brooms to sweep away water from the pitch due to heavy rain before the Group E qualifier invited scorn and ridicule from fans.

Embarrassed by the incident, Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu ordered the closure of the venue for restoration work on June 15.

As for the FA Cup final, a decision will be made on the venue and date soon.

MFL chief executive officer Stuart Ramalingam said pitch condition and venue capacity were the two main points when choosing a stadium for a match.
