MFL, FAM look into ways to handle unruly fans

UNRULY fans can cause disruptions and issues during football matches.

And the FAM and the Malaysian Football League (MFL) are looking into the safety aspects following incidents in two recent M-League matches.

Several fans turned unruly at the Sultan Muhd IV Stadium in Kota Baru when Kelantan took on Perak in a Premier League match on Aug 10. A similar incident occurred when Melaka United hosted Sri Pahang in Saturday's Super League match.

"We will definitely sit together with the MFL to discuss the matter and bring it up to the safety committee soon," said FAM secretary-general Saifuddin Abu Bakar yesterday.

Several fans threw stones onto the pitch and set off fireworks in Perak's 2-1 win over Kelantan. It continued outside the stadium, with fans damaging the bus of the Perak team.

At the Hang Jebat Stadium, an altercation between frustrated fans broke out when Pahang scored a last-minute goal to force a 2-2 draw with Melaka.

In the past, teams were sanctioned with fines for crowd trouble.

In 2016, the Perak FA were fined RM47,500 after fans threw plastic bottles and caused injuries to rival supporters.

The Kelantan FA were fined RM62,500 in 2013 when home fans lit off fireworks and threw objects at the visiting team's supporters.
