Terengganu capture Malaysia Games football gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu proved today that they are one of the most successful states in football development by winning the coveted Malaysia Games gold.

The East Coast side defeated Penang 2-0 in the final at KLFA Stadium, and quashed the islanders' dream of winning their first ever Games football title.

For Terengganu, this was their fourth gold medal in the Malaysia Games since it was incepted in 1986.

Terengganu took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute through captain Safwan Mazlan who incidentally donned the No 24 jersey. And it was the 22-year-old's third goal in the Games.

In the 86th minute, Penang's Aidil Azuan scored an own goal after deflecting in a shot from Terengganu's Aqil Idham Bahari.

Terengganu coach Badrul Afzan Razali said: "The key to our success is definitely teamwork and the spirit we have built.

"This is the first gold medal in my coaching career but this achievement is for the future of the players and the development of Terengganu FC II players."

Meanwhile, Selangor won the bronze after a 3-1 win over Federal Territories at the UKM Stadium in Kajang.

Selangor snatched a 1-0 in the 11th minute through a penalty by Khairil Zain. But FT equalised just before halftime through Suhaimi Abu.

Selangor surged ahead again in the 55th minute through Harry Danish Mohd Haizon's powerful kick. In the 78th minute, Selangor scored their third goal thorough Fakrul Iman Naszari.

Final: Terengganu 2 Penang 0.

Third placing: Selangor 3 Federal Territories 1.
