VAR to make M-League debut in 2023 Malaysia Cup and FA Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: The video assistant referee (VAR) is set to make its M-League debut in next year's Malaysia Cup and FA Cup.

FAM deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram said the national body have met two service providers but are in the preliminary stage of discussions.

"It will cost between RM4 million and RM5 million to implement VAR in the M-League. The package is for 300 matches across various venues.

"However, we need to look into aspects like Internet service and broadcast cameras for VAR," said Sivasundaram after the executive committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today.

"For the Malaysia Cup and FA Cup, we may implement VAR, if everything goes well, from the group stages or quarter-finals.

"However, we will discuss it with the Malaysian Football League before making a decision.

Meanwhile, the national Under-17 team may head to Qatar for a month-long training camp in February.

"The team did well by qualifying for next year's Under-17 Asian Cup in Bahrain. We believe this team have the potential, and the stint in Qatar will help them progress to the next level. We are awaiting confirmation from the Qatar FA," said FAM deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi.

FAM confirmed that the national Under-23 team will play in next year's Phnom Penh Sea Games.
