Azraai's 'I told you so' moment

KUALA LUMPUR: When the Malaysian Football League (MFL) announced a revamp of the M-League in July, Azraai Khor Abdullah warned of the consequences.

The former Kedah coach was proven right. After Sarawak United and Melaka United got into trouble and were barred from the league, PJ City became the latest to withdraw from the 2023 season.

PJ City cited the changing landscape of the league, specifically the move to allow up to nine foreign players (which will benefit rich clubs) for their withdrawal.

"From the beginning I have said that there will be matters arising from the league changes especially in matters of finances," said Azraai.

"PJ City's decision comes at a loss (to Malaysian football). Though they are a mid-table team, they are still contributing to the national team (by providing players).

"There is something special about this team. They can still put up a fight despite not having any foreign players because their management and setup is good.

"So it is a big loss that PJ City will no longer be able to help the national team.

"I respect their decision and I respect what they've done in the last few seasons."

To date, PJ City have provided talents like Darren Lok, Kalamullah Al-Hafiz Mat Rowi and V. Ruventhiran for Harimau Malaya.
