Ashley falls short at WAAP

NATIONAL golfer Ashley Lau (pic) came up short in her bid to earn slots in the British Open and the Evian Championship.

The Sarawak-born, however, enjoyed a stellar run in the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) Championship in Abu Dhabi by finishing sixth with a 15-under 276 yesterday.

Ashley had started the day in joint fourth and needed a rousing finish on the final day to boost her chances of earning invitational cards for the two Majors.

Ashley, however, only managed a two-under 70 yesterday.

Japan's Mizuki Hashimoto claimed the win with a superb four-under 68 for an overall 16-under 272.

Overnight leader Natthakritta Vongtaveelap of Thailand managed a par-72 for second place with 15-under 273.

Also finishing joint second was Thailand's Kan Bunnabodee and Australia's Kelsey Bennett while Japan's Nanako Inagaki came in fifth at 13-under 275 ahead of Ashley.

Despite missing out on a chance to earn a card for the British Open and the Evian Championship, it is still a magnificent effort from Ashley as the WAAP meet is one of the most prestigious amateur events for women.

She was also the best Malaysian performer in the competition.

Natasha Oon was the next best Malaysian as she finished joint 11th with a seven-under 281.

Liyana Durisic finished joint 25th with a three-under 285, followed by Audrey Tan (31st) on 287 and Winnie Ng (43rd) with 294.
