Natasha, Ashley picked for Arnold Palmer Cup

MALAYSIA'S top amateur golfers Natasha Andrea Oon and Ashley Lau have been selected to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup in Switzerland from July 1-3.

The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style team competition featuring the 24 finest American men and women's collegiate golfers against 24 from the rest of the world.

Natasha and Ashley, No 18 and No 31 respectively in the world amateur rankings, have made the Team International women's roster on merit by virtue of being the leading six players in the final qualifying ranking list on April 14.

The other international players who qualified on merit were German duo Alexandra Forsterling and Aline Krauter, Hannah Darling (Scotland) and Carolina Chacarra (Spain).

Completing the 12-member women's side through the Team International committee picks were Julia Lopez Ramirez (Spain, Lu Hsin Yu (Taiwan), Benedetta Moresco (Italy), Amelia Williamson (England), Lorna McClymont (Scotland) and Kajsa Arwefjall (Sweden).

"Being part of such a prestigious event is such an incredible honour," Ashley told University of Michigan official athletics website mgoblue.com.

"To think that I'll be going to Switzerland, I can't wait! I'm very much looking forward to making new friends and playing some great golf alongside some of the best golfers in the world."

In the 2020 edition, Malaysia's Alyaa Abdulghany was part of the Team International winning side that outclassed Team USA 40½-19½ at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Florida. Alyaa impressed by delivering three out of a possible four points.

Prior to 2018, the Arnold Palmer Cup was contested by the US and Europe for 15 straight years.

Before that, the first six editions since its inception in 1997 saw US take on Britain and Ireland combined.

The United States lead the Palmer Cup series with 13 wins, 11 defeats and one draw.
