Legendary former national golfer M. Ramayah dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian golfing great M. Ramayah died today at the age of 67.

The former national golfer succumbed to spine cancer. He breathed his last at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM in Cheras this morning.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Ramayah had represented Malaysia at the World Cup of Golf a record 13 times.

His best effort in the World Cup came in 1994 at Dorado Beach Resort in Puerto Rico. Joining forces with the late P. Gunasegaran, he entered the final round in third place but went on to finish ninth. The feat that has yet to be surpassed.

Like many players of his era, Ramayah started out as a caddie and turned professional at 18.

In his heyday, Ramayah dominated the No 1 position in the MPGA Order of Merit from 1976 to 1997.
