Shahmie given the nod, set for debut against New Zealand

BHUBANESWAR: Shahmie Irfan Suhaimi, 20, has been given the chance of a lifetime to play in his maiden Hockey World Cup even though he has zero international exposure to date.

Malaysian coach Arul Selvaraj selected Shahmie over Tengku Nasrul Ikmal, who has 12 caps, after Shahril Saabah picked up a left hamstring injury while playing Chile at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela on Tuesday.

"I selected Shahmie based on several factors I noticed in him during training sessions. I believe he will be able to perform when given a chance against New Zealand on Thursday," said Arul after Malaysia's training session at the Kalinga Stadium today.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) have allowed teams to register 20 players for this World Cup, and the two extra reserves can be called upon if any of the selected 18 pick up injuries.

Shahril was naturally disapointed that he could not help Malaysia in their remaining matches.

"While playing against Netherlands (lost 4-0) I already felt tightness on my left calf but I carried on. However, it became worse while playing against Chile (won 3-2) and I had to call it a day.

"The team doctor said (after a scan) there is a small tear and I should not risk making it worse. He advised me to rest for the rest of the tournament," said Shahril.

"I hope my replacement (Shahmie) will give his best and help the team achieve their target which is to qualify for the quarter-finals," said Shahril.
