Negri eye treble after reaching Vivian May Soars Cup final

KUALA LUMPUR: Treble-chasing Negri Sembilan will take on Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UniTen) Thunderbolts in the Vivian May Soars Cup final following their semi-final, second-leg victories at National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Negri drew 1-1 with Terengganu Ladies Hockey Team in the second leg to qualify 5-2 on aggregate.

UniTen, meanwhile, edged Young Tigresses 1-0 for a 3-1 aggregate win.

Terengganu took a 16th-minute lead through national player Wan Norfaiezah Saiuti, but Nuramirah Shakira equalised in the 34th minute with her 18th goal of the season for Negri.

UniTen defeated Young Tigresses, thanks to Siti Nur Arfah's goal in the 34th minute.

Negri coach K. Rajan said it was his team's worst performance of the season.

"The entire match was played at a slow pace. My team became too comfortable with the 4-1 score in the first leg. We even had to chase the game when Terengganu took the lead.

"This should not happen in the final," said Rajan.

Negri will be gunning for their third title on Sunday after victories in the Charity Shield and Malaysia Women's Hockey League.

UniTen coach Izzwan Salleh expects a close final.

"Both teams have played many times this season, and it is going to be a close final.

"But I expect my team to put up a spirited performance to win the Cup."

In the men's TNB Cup, Terengganu HT will take on Tenaga Nasional in Sunday's final.

Terengganu overcame UiTM HA 3-1 in the semi-final second leg for an 8-2 aggregate win while Tenaga defeated Maybank 3-0 in shootout after a 5-5 aggregate draw.
