Scent of The Vampire

Mixed Martial Arts fighter Saiful 'The Vampire' Merican, who has been on the ropes since Covid-19 struck last year, has launched a men's sports fragrance.

Saiful hopes his new scent for men will supplement his income and also help others who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

On the verge of closing down his MMA gym, which was his main income the past 11 years, Saiful has also resorted to selling ikan bakar and ayam percik last year.

The 33-year-old said he wanted to create something different, that his cologne would also benefit and inspire others.

The perfume, which he has named Qu-at Sport, is specially tailored for active people, and retails at RM89.

"The main reason I wanted to do this is to help people. Almost every day, we see news of people struggling to survive, suffering depression, and there has also been a rise in suicides," said Saiful.

"The reason I chose the name Qu-at is that we need to be strong at the moment. I don't mean having big muscles but being mentally strong to get through these hard times.

"Anyone interested in becoming a reseller of this fragrance is welcome to contact us. There is no joining fee required.

"If it can help someone supplement their income even just a little bit, that would mean a great deal to me. We are also looking to donate a portion of the proceeds to those in need.

"I chose to create a fragrance because I wanted to do something different from what others are doing.

"As an athlete, I always found that normal perfumes were not lasting. This perfume is for active people who sweat a lot. The scent has a fresh, fruity character with a hint of the ocean breeze.

"We may expand our line to include different scents in the future depending on the demand."

Saiful will likely close down his gym though.

Merican Muay Thai Gym, located in Mont Kiara, is one of the top martial arts gyms in the Klang Valley.

"The gym has not been operating since May due to the various lockdowns. There is still great uncertainty due to Covid-19.

"We feel that it may be too hard for us to continue with the business like this for much longer.

"We have informed our landlord that if there are other tenants interested in renting, we will withdraw from the premises.

"Our landlord, however, has been very supportive and understanding and has asked us to continue. We understand that they (landlord) have commitments, and we do not want to burden them."

Saiful added that he still sells ikan bakar and ayam percik to supplement his income, which is now mainly reduced to online coaching classes.
