Agilan faces force of nature

Agilan Thani has taken on all sorts of opponents in his years as a Mixed Martial Arts fighter, but this time he stood no chance.

It was a natural enemy so powerful that it TKO his house, and left him counting the damage.

The massive floods, which submerged parts of Malaysia over the weekend, did not spare Agilan's home in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

However, it has not dampened his determination to get his career back on track.

The floods may have hurt his home, but not his gym, which escaped the disaster.

Once Agilan puts his messed-up house in order, he aims to continue training to be able to compete in at least two fights in the ONE Championship series next year.

"My house got affected by the floods but my gym was not. So I am looking to get back to training this week," he said.

Agilan, 26, who lives with his fiancee Anchali Yogan, said the flood was a "surprising and overwhelming" experience.

"We were out at the grocers when the neighbours called (informing of the flood). We were quite concerned at the time because our dogs were in the living room," said Agilan.

"We immediately went home to secure the dogs upstairs, and moved one of our cars — the one that we use most often — to somewhere we thought safer. But the car eventually got flooded there as well.

"By night, the water had risen to chest level on the ground floor. Everything downstairs — the sofa, fridge, washing machine and even my bike - started floating.

"My fiancee's old car (in the driveway) was completely 'drowned' and most of our clothes were gone (damaged).

"It was not easy to clean out all the mud and there was a lot of insects, dust and rubbish. Some neighbours' houses also had snakes.

"We don't know exactly how much the damage is yet, but I estimate it to be between RM10,000 and RM20,000 because we have to repair the car, bike, electrical appliances and (paint) the walls."

On his MMA career, Agilan said: "I want to get as much experience as I can, and I am looking forward to get back in the ONE cage (for a fight) by March or April.

"My goal for next year is to get at least two bouts and two wins. Hopefully, 2022 will be my year."
