Pandemic may derail SIC's driving experience centre

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) are reevaluating their plans to build a driving experience centre (DEC) at the circuit.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the multimillion ringgit project was originally expected to be completed this year.

"We have opened the tender for DEC and we have received feedback from a few companies," he said.

"But before we can proceed, we will do another feasibility study to see whether it is financially viable for us to continue at this moment (due to Covid-19).

"The original completion date for DEC was supposed to be this year but it will be moved to next year if we decide to proceed with the project."

Shafriman remains hopeful that DEC will be built, if not next year, sometime further down the road.

The main function of DEC is as a training centre to educate not only high performance drivers but also daily road users who seek to be safer drivers.

"DEC has a few different features, including a 1.5km track where we can simulate various situations a driver might face," added Shafriman.

"This includes wet driving conditions as we also plan to build a kick plate as part of DEC.

"On top of that, we will also have a section for 4x4 vehicles.

"These features will allow drivers the opportunity to learn to control their cars well."

Apart from educating drivers, the DEC will also provide SIC with an additional income stream to complement their revenues from main track rental, hospitality facilities and go kart circuit.

While income from hosting major events such as MotoGP contribute significantly to their balance sheet, track rental has always been the SIC circuit's bread and butter.
