SIC deny getting F1 offer from FIA

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) have denied that they have received an offer from the FIA to host a Formula One race this season.

The FIA are looking to secure a new host to replace the Russian Grand Prix on Sept 23-25, which has been cancelled by the governing body due to the conflict in Ukraine.

It is learnt that Germany, Malaysia, China and Turkey have been shortlisted to take over the Russian GP dates.

Malaysia were once part of the F1 calendar. However, the government pulled the brakes on the race in 2017, citing rising costs and dwindling revenues.

The recent staging of the MotoGP Winter Test led some to say that F1 might be returning to Malaysia.

SIC chief operating officer (CEO) Azhan Shafriman Hanif said: "We have not received anything from the FIA.

"The government will decide if the offer comes.

"We also need to see if we are prepared enough to host a race. If at all, we take up the offer, we will need at least six months to prepare for it. "However, hosting a F1 race is not cheap. We have to be realistic as our economy is not in a very good shape due to the Covid-19 pandemic," said Azhan.

The 22-race F1 season kicks off in Bahrain tomorrow.
