Kasma aims to return to world stage

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world championship rider Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin is eying a return to Moto2 as a full season rider in 2024.

Kasma said he has never given up hope on making a comeback to the world championship and has been informed of a potential slot for him in the 2024 season.

Kasma was one of nine Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) riders who visited Balai Berita in Bangsar yesterday to meet with reporters and editors from the New Straits Times Press and tour its facilities.

The 22-year-old, who currently competes in the ASB1000 class of the ARRC, said: "I am still hoping to go back to Moto2, competing in the world championship is the goal of every rider and it is the same with me," said Kasma.

"I have been speaking to some of our team's sponsors and was told that there is a slot for Moto2, albeit in the 2024 season.

"Whether I can get it or not it all depends on how I perform in ARRC this year and next year.

"If I can become the overall champion this year in ASB1000 there is a good chance I can compete in the FIM JuniorGP Moto2 class next year (previously known as Moto2 European Championship) which will help me prepare for a comeback to Moto2 (world championship) the following year.

"The bikes used in FIM JuniorGP Moto2 are exactly the same as those used in the Moto2 World Championships, so it will be a good chance for me to get used to it again."

Kasma signed a three-year deal to race with Onexox TKKR SAG Team in Moto2 in 2020, but left the team after a season following a change in title sponsors.

"When I first signed for the team (in 2020) it was because I was offered a three-year contract, if it was less than that, I would not have accepted," added Kasma.

"It is impossible to be able to ride for one year in Moto2 and immediately be fighting at the front of the grid.

"It takes time to gain experience and get used to both training and racing at this level. I learnt a lot when I was in the world championships and I really want to go back."

Kasma, who currently rides for Yamaha GEN BLU Racing Team Asean, is third (84 points) in the overall ASB1000 class standings after three rounds
