Sponsor boosts for stadium project

THE new national rugby stadium project in Putrajaya is set to receive a shot in the arm thanks to strong sponsorship interest from a conglomerate.

Malaysia Rugby (MR) honorary secretary Amrul Hazarin Hamidon confirmed that a company is interested in helping with the project as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

"Nothing has been finalised yet, but this conglomerate is keen, and with their support, we hope to improve the facilities at the stadium," said Amrul yesterday.

"Under the original plan, the stadium facilities are basic due to limited resources. We hope to add other features such as an adjacent training field and a hostel for the players.

"In return, we will give naming rights to the sponsor similar to the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. The sponsor is also willing to help with stadium maintenance costs.

"We have informed the Sports Ministry about it, and we will be ironing out the finer details with all parties involved soon."

The Sports Ministry, then under former Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, had approved an RM17 million budget for the stadium early last year.

The stadium is scheduled for completion next year, but there could be delays due to Covid-19.
