MTBC taking no risk with surge in Klang Valley Covid-19 cases

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) have decided to play it safe by waiting out the Movement Control Order (MCO) before resuming training.

It is learnt that Sunway Mega Lanes in Bandar Sunway is willing to allow the national bowlers to resume training behind closed doors, but the MTBC are not risking it due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the Klang Valley.

"MTBC president Datuk Dr PS Nathan told us that the numbers are high and we all should stay home for this MCO period.

"The risks far outweigh the need for training at this point, and the safety of our athletes and coaches are our priority.

"We will look into this again when the situation gets better, especially in Selangor," said MTBC secretary-general Maradona Chok yesterday.

A fortnight ago, the national bowling squad were rocked by three positive Covid-19 cases, including World Championships gold medallist Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, who was admitted at University Hospital.

The national body had to stop all training programmes while the bowlers were placed under self-quarantine at their homes or the National Sports Council hostel until they took a second swab test.

MTBC confirmed yesterday that all results had returned negative, and that the three who tested positive have also recovered and are now at home.

Last week, Holloway Cheah told Timesport that he was growing concerned with the lack of training ahead of the Vietnam Sea Games.

The national bowling squad have been one of the worst hit by the pandemic as their training centre in Sunway Pyramid is also a public alley.
