Heartbreak for Pandelela as China's Hongchan wins platform gold

KUALA LUMPUR: A disastrous first dive put paid to Pandelela Rinong's hopes of securing a medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

The four-time Olympian lost control right off the bat in the final of the women's 10m platform individual event as she only managed 18.00 points in her first dive at the Olympic Aquatic Centre on Thursday.

Pandelela, the bronze medallist at the London Games in 2012 who had qualified from the semi-finals in seventh place earlier in the day, appeared shaken as she struggled to regain composure.

Pandelela never recovered as she only tallied 245.85 points to finish last in a field of 12 divers.

China's 14-year-old sensation Quan Hongchan announced her arrival on the international stage as she took gold ahead of compatriot and reigning world champion Chen Yuxi.

She scored a whooping 466.20 points while Yuxi had to settle for silver with 425.40 points.

Australia's Melissa Wu took bronze with 371.40.
