Adamas take their time in deciding duo's fate

Malaysians may have to wait until the end of the year before they know the fate of the two national weightlifters who failed a doping test in May.

The duo are scheduled for a hearing process conducted by an independent panel appointed by the National Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas) this week.

Adamas, however, are going strictly by the book and could take up to two months to reveal the results of the hearing and any possible suspensions, which could be some time in December.

"The notification of the results will be made within two months after the hearing panel has made a decision," said Adamas director Azura Abidin yesterday.

"Adamas will release a public statement on this matter based on the (World Anti-Doping Agency) International Standard for Results Management guidelines.

"If there is a decision by that time (December) we will be able to announce it."

Adamas have kept a tight lid on proceedings since the case became public.

Although they had confirmed that two lifters tested positive for banned anabolic androgenic steroids, they have never named them.

The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF), however, have confirmed the duo to be former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad and backup lifter Ikram Haikal Muhammad Zuari.

MWF, who have struggled with doping issues in recent years, took the drastic step of disbanding the national team recently, and are looking to start fresh.

The national body held a three-day selection tournament which ended yesterday in Kuala Rompin, where state-level athletes who meet the minimum requirement standards, were invited to try out for the new national team.
