Great comeback by Sivasangari

Malaysia's S. Sivasangari and Rachel Arnold stormed into the quarter-finals of the Squash on Fire Open in Washington on Thursday.

Sivasangari, currently ranked a career high No 26 in the world, fought from two games down to beat eighth seed Danielle Letourneau of Canada 5-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 in the second round.

The 23-year-old Kedahan struggled to match world No 20 Danielle's pace in the early stages as she slipped into a two-game deficit.

The national No 1, however, fought hard to level the scores before sealing the win after 45 minutes.

"It was really tough mentally for me especially being two games down as I started off pretty slow," admitted Sivasangari.

"I knew I needed to step up and get the third game in order to get my confidence going again, and I think I did just that."

Sivasangari's reward is a showdown with Egyptian former world No 3 Nour El Tayeb, who is making a comeback after announcing her retirement in 2020.

National No 3 Rachel swept past Canadian seventh seed and world No 17 Hollie Naughton 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9.

"It was a close match in all four games but this is definitely the best I have played since coming to the US last month, and I felt more relaxed on court as well," said Rachel.

"This is also my first win over a top 20 player in a while, so it's a much needed confidence boost."

Rachel next takes on American world No 24 Sabrina Sobhy who ousted compatriot and world No 11 Olivia Fiechter 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, in the last eight.

Youngster Aifa Azman, however, lost 11-8, 11-6, 13-11 to second seed and world No 6 Joelle King of New Zealand.

In the men's event, national No 1 Ng Eain Yow went down 11-6, 11-1, 11-6 to Scotland's Greg Lobban.
