Hoe Yean bags two silver, Jinq En finishes fifth in pet event

HANOI: Malaysia won their first medals in swimming at the Hanoi Sea Games today, narrowly missing out on a gold at the My Dinh Aquatics Centre.

Khiew Hoe Yean claimed two silver medals via the men's 400m freestyle event and the 200m backstroke.

Hoe Yean clocked 3:52.03s in the 400m freestyle final, to finish behind Vietnam's Hoang Nguyen Huy, who won the event comfortably on 3:48.06.

Singapore's Glen Lim completed the podium (3:56.68) while Welson Sim settled for sixth (4:02.66).

Hoe Yean came close to winning the gold in his favoured 200m backstroke event, clocking 2:01.67s in the final, but was pipped to the wall by Vietnam's Nguyen Tran Hung (2:01.58s).

Indonesian Farrel Armandia Tangkas (2:01.80s) was third.

Hoe Yean admitted he was disappointed not to clinch the gold.

"It is a bit disappointing as I expected something better. However, I gave it my best shot," said Hoe Yean.

"It was tough for me as it was my first day swimming in the individual events. Maybe the effort I put into the 400m freestyle affected me (in the 200m backstroke), I am not sure."

Phee Jinq En, who won the 50m breaststroke gold at Manila 2019, was forced to settle for fifth this time after clocking 32.43s in the final.

Singapore's Letitia Sim emerged victorious in a time of 31.43 with Thailand's Srisa-Ard Jenjira (31.63) and Singapore's Christie Chue (32.10) coming in second and third.

A dejected Jinq En was almost lost for words.

"I am not able to pinpoint what went wrong. I gave it my best shot, perhaps I have lost my confidence," said Jinq En.

Sea Games debutant Bryan Leong impressed early on in the 100m butterfly but eventually settled for seventh on 54.79s.
