Malaysian bowlers fare poorly

HANOI: Malaysia's men's bowling squad of new faces are still struggling to find their feet at the Sea Games.

After a dismal showing in the singles earlier, Malaysia floundered today in the doubles as Syazirol Shamsuddin and Shahrukh Amin Zulkifli failed to get going at the Royal City Hanoi Bowling Centre.

Not only did they fail to finish on the podium, Shahrukh-Hafiz Zainuddin and Syazirol-Nevern Netaneel came in a lowly eighth and 10th respectively in the 12-pair contest.

Shahrukh-Hafiz could only muster a 2,470 total over 12 games to finish a whopping 172 pins behind eventual winners Ryan Lalisang-Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia.

Syazirol-Nevern had only 2,433 to show, and that's 118 pins behind Singapore's bronze medallist Darren Ong-Cheah Ray Han.

All that is left for Malaysia to salvage is the team event. Malaysia have not failed to return with a gold since the 2011 Palembang Games.

"Our bowlers are here to gain experience. The other countries sent their top bowlers, but we are thinking about the future," said team manager Robert Lu.

"We want to create a bigger pool of quality bowlers capable of winning honours for the country."

Robert believes Malaysia can do well in the team competition starting tomorrow.

"We are always stronger as a team. I am confident the bowlers will rise and meet expectations in the team event."
