Don't rule Malaysia out yet

After a poor start in the individual events, Malaysian bowlers are finally rolling in the team events.

They are back in the gold hunt with both the men and women getting off to a flying start in the team events yesterday.

The men's squad of Nevern Netaneel, Hafiz Zainuddin, Shahrukh Amin Zulkifli and Syazirol Shamsuddin topped the first block with a 2,679 total with a 68 pins lead over the Philippines. Singapore are third on 2,497. Indonesia lie fourth with 2,408.

The Malaysian women's foursome of Nur Syazwani Sahar, Nora Lyana Nastasia Norkamal, Gillian Lim and Nerosha Keligit also sparkled by finishing atop the leaderboard in the afternoon. They chalked up a 2,506 total to finish ahead of the more illustrious Singapore (2,443) and Indonesia (2,346).

For the Malaysian men, it was the perfect response after none of them finished on the podium in the singles and doubles.

"We're absolutely pumped up because this is the event we're aiming for," said Nevern.

"We're glad to have a good start by placing first after the first block. But there are still many games left to be played, we can't afford to let our guard down.

"We need to capitalise on this lead and try to go for gold.

"We're well aware of the challenge coming from our opponents, especially Indonesia and Singapore who are represented by their senior members."

Syazwani said Malaysia are always extra motivated when it comes to team event. "Team Malaysia have good overall team depth which makes us stand a fighting chance in the team event at any championships."
