Mun Yee focusing on athlete's health

KUALA LUMPUR: While the divers are busy preparing for the Commonwealth Games, national assistant coach Leong Mun Yee revealed efforts are being made to ensure the athletes are free from any illnesses before the Birmingham assignment from July 28-Aug 8.

Mun Yee is concerned because several divers were unwell during the recent World Championships in Budapest.

"We have to monitor and make sure they are healthy, not ill, from now until the Birmingham Games," said Mun Yee recently.

"During the world meet, a few divers were not well. They had flu and cough but tested negative for Covid-19.

"For the next three weeks, until they fly to Birmingham, the divers will also have to take care of their health."

The diving team are in a buoyant mood after a positive performance at the world meet.

Pandelela Rinong was the top performer by contributing two bronze medals in the 10m platform and synchro (with Nur Dhabitah Sabri) events.

In both events, Malaysia finished ahead of their Commonwealth rivals, making them favourites to take two titles in Birmingham, if everything goes to plan.

The team are also plotting for medals in the mixed 3m springboard and 10m platform synchro disciplines in Birmingham.

"We have about three weeks left, and the hard work continues, despite the encouraging results in Budapest.

"We had no targets for the world meet, so returning with two medals is a fantastic result, which will offer the divers motivation to do well in Birmingham.

"However, there are still areas to improve on before our Birmingham assault," she added.
