Yon: There's no secret formula

BIRMINGHAM: So what is the secret of the two Malaysian strongmen who delivered back-to-back gold medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Saturday?

Their coach Yon Haryono replied there is no super formula.

He said it is all about being disciplined, eating the right food, having good rest and supplements for energy.

"The only secret to their success is discipline and determination in their approach during training.

"We trained for 30 days in Lampong (Indonesia) before coming to Birmingham. Aniq (Kasdan) and Aznil (Bidin) were the most consistent lifters every day.

"That's why it did not come as a surprise to me when both of them won gold medals because they are in their prime," said Indonesian Yon who has also helped two of his country's lifters win Olympic medals.

Aniq, 20, was a sensation in the 55kg category when he not only won the gold but also broke the Commonwealth Games record with a 249kg total.

This was followed by Aznil who won gold and posted a Games record with a 285kg lift in the 61kg category.

What's next for the two lifters? The 2024 Olympics top five, said Yon.

"Just before leaving for Birmingham, I tested both the lifters and they had totals which can qualify them for the Olympics and also among the top five.

"In training at Lampong, Aniq lifted 150kg everyday in the clean and jerk while Aznil lifted around 160kg.

"On July 11, in a final test, Aniq lifted a combined 265kg and his golden lift (in Birmingham) was only 249kg.

"Aznil had lifted a total of 290kg in the test and only needed 285kg to become champion," he said.

The lifters will need to take part in at least six qualifying events, as well as the World Championships in Colombia at the end of the year, to get enough points for the Paris Olympics.

Yon said he will prepare Aniq and Aznil for the 61kg category as the 51kg event has been scrapped from the Paris Olympics.
