BANGKOK: Malaysia finished on the podium in the women's Asia Cup by beating world No 13 Kazakhstan 2-0 in the bronze playoff in Bangkok today.
Iren Hussin (15th minute) and Nur Aisyah Yaacob (39th) each converted a penalty stroke to seal the win for world No 21 Malaysia.
Malaysia last made the podium in the 2017 Doha edition when they finished runners-up to Kazakhstan. Three years ago in Thailand, the team finished fourth after losing to Uzbekistan in the bronze playoff.
"We played well as a team against a higher-ranked Kazakhstan today.
"Although we made some mistakes during the match, we recovered quickly and avoided conceding goals.
"It is a good win, especially after losing to Indonesia (1-0) in the semi-finals," said coach Rodzhanizam Mat Radzi today.
Malaysia's only title in the tournament was recorded in 2009 when they defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 in the final.
