Azeem hamstrung in sprint double hope

KUALA LUMPUR: Azeem Fahmi's hopes of a sprint double were dashed after he pulled his hamstring just 10 metres before the finish line in the Malaysia Games men's 200m final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

The 18-year-old lost the gold to Johor's Arysad Saat by 0.01 seconds.

Arsyad clocked 21.02s while Perak's Azeem crossed the line in 21.03.

Azeem, who won the 100m gold two days ago, was in the lead before slowing down in the last 10 metres after pulling his hamstring.

Negri Sembilan's Haiqal Hanafi clocked 21.18 for the bronze.

Azeem said he had aggravated his right hamstring problem yesterday — first sustained at the World Junior Championships in Colombia last month.

"I aggravated the injury today in the final 10 metres of the race. And I am not sure how serious it is," said Azeem, who has a PB of 20.83 in the 200m.

Azeem was immediately sent to the National Sports Institute (NSI) for treatment.

Arysad, who bagged silver in the 100m, said he never thought he would win gold as Azeem was the favourite.

"I never gave up as I wanted revenge.

"Azeem is fast off the blocks but slows down just before the finish line. I pushed myself hard and pipped him to the gold by a whisker," said Arysad.

"Thank God, I won as I had pulled my hamstring after the race."
