Azeem bolts from two professional offers to focus on his education

IPOH: Azeem Fahmi, who is the country's fastest man, said he will turn down offers from two agents to turn professional.

The national 100m record holder said he wants to give priority to his education.

Sprinter Azeem said the offers from the two companies in America and Europe were made to him after the recent World Youth Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia.

He said, though, that he is still having talks with the two agents, it is highly likely that he would reject them to focus on his education.

Azeem said the agents require him, as a professional athlete, to compete in competitions while he will be well remunerated.

He said being a professional athlete has its drawbacks as he will not be able to compete in inter-college and university meets, and also having to divide his time between education and sport.

"I want to focus on my studies before becoming a professional athlete. To me education is important for my future.

"I will not be running my whole life and my education is what I will hold on to for my future." he said at the Perak Athletes Excellence Incentive Presentation Event at the Dewan Serbaguna Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan in Ipoh yesterday.

Present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Perak Communication nd Multimedia, Youth and Sports committee director Khairul Shahril Mohamed.

Azeem said he is also facing a dilemma on whether to accept offers from Houston University and Auburn University in America.
