Malaysia women suffer heavy defeats in Asia Rugby Sevens

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia paid the price for fielding a young women's team as they were thrashed in the first series of the Asia Rugby Sevens in Bangkok.

Seven teams featured in the first series and Malaysia parading eight new faces were hammered 53-0 by China in the first match of Group B at Boonyachinda Stadium today.

In the second match, Malaysia were outplayed 36-0 by Hong Kong.

Malaysia will face the Philippines tomorrow and a win will see them fight for fifth spot in the playoffs.

National coach Siddiq Amir Jalil was disappointed with his team.

"Although we had some new faces, our performances today were a letdown. We need to buck up for tomorrow's matches, especially against the Philippines, which we have not played for quite some time."

Seven teams featured in the men's competition and Malaysia also lost both their Group B matches today. They lost 31-14 to South Korea and 37-7 to Japan.

Malaysia will play the Philippines in the plate semi-finals tomorrow.
