Squash: Rachel finally beats her Egyptian nemesis

KUALA LUMPUR: Rachel Arnold finally got the better of Nadine Shahin of Egypt after three meetings to reach the Malaysian Open semi-finals at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil today.

The world No 26 came back from a set down to upset world No 23 Nadine 6-11, 11-1, 11-9, 11-9 in 36 minutes.

The match was stopped for 15 minutes in the fourth set after Nadine had a fall from a collision with Rachel.

Eighth seed Rachel, who was the 2019 Malaysian Open champion, will face second seed Nele Gilis of Belgium tomorrow.

World No 14 Nele eliminated Malaysia's defending champion Aifa Azman 11-9, 11-4, 11-2 in 32 minutes.

Rachel, 26, said: "This is the first time I beat Nadine in three meetings and I feel really good about it.

"My teammate, Ng Eain Yow, advised me to be more fiery today and I took his advice.

"It is going to be tough playing Nele as I lost to her in straight sets in the British Open last year."

World No 21 Aifa was in tears after her loss to Nele.

"I knew it was going to be a tough match against her as she is ranked higher than me and is more experienced than me.

"She controlled the game in all three sets and never gave me a chance to make a comeback. All credit to her for playing really well.

"It was a bad day for me and it was a lesson for me.

"But I will not let this defeat affect my performance for next week's Hong Kong Open," she added.

The other semi-final is between top seed Olivia Fiechter of the United States and third seed Tensi Evans of Wales.

Addeen Idrakie's giant-killing run in the men's competition came to an end with a 1-11, 9-11, 6-11 loss to top seed Tarek Momen of Egypt in the quarter-finals.

World No 83 Addeen had earlier stunned world No 20 Omar Mosaad of Egypt and world No 19 Raphael Kandra of Germany in the first two rounds.

Tarek will face sixth seed Nicolas Mueller of Switzerland for a place in the final.
