Squash: Mazen, Nele crowned Malaysian Open champions

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day of upsets in the men's and women's finals of the Malaysian Open Squash Championships in Bukit Jalil today.

Second seed Nele Gilis of Belgium came back from a set down to beat world No 11 and top seed Olivia Fiechter of the United States 5-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-9 in 59 minutes to lift the women's title.

World No14 Nele was thrilled with her effort.

It was her third PSA Tour title this year after the French Open and Australian Open.

"I wasn't expecting to play so well like today.

"Olivia is a good player, and she proved that in the final.

"When I was down, I just thought that I had nothing to lose. I relaxed a bit and started playing better again," said the 26-year-old, who is the elder sister of Tinne, ranked No 12 in the world.

World No 9 Mazen Hesham of Egypt, meanwhile, bounced back from two sets down to beat compatriot and world No 7 Tarek Momen 2-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 in 54 minutes to claim the men's title.

"Today I won my first title after seven years," said the 28-year-old Mazen.

"The win over Tarek is my first against a top-eight ranked player."
