Terengganu, Putrajaya to battle for Agong's Cup crown

KUALA LUMPUR: After five weeks of gruelling competition, the Agong's Cup rugby competition reaches its climax tomorrow at the TUDM Stadium in Shah Alam.

The final will see defending champions Terengganu facing off against title favourites Putrajaya.

It is expected to be a balanced affair as both squads have quality players.

Terengganu coach Nik Safuan Ismade Nik Man is confident his charges will win the final.

The east coast side edged Armed Forces 24-22 in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

"Putrajaya have current and former national players, so they have a slight advantage over us," said Nik Safuan today.

"What I can do is pinpoint their weaknesses. We have identified a few from their semi-final match. We will try to capitalise on them.

"We also have a few areas we need strengthening.

"I think we are capable of overcoming Putrajaya. However, there are factors which we cannot control, such as the weather and the referee."

Terengganu won the Agong's Cup in 2019. The tournament was not held in 2020 and last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Putrajaya, which have former Japan Top League player K. Dinesvaran this season, defeated Royal Malaysian Police 29-24 in their semi-final.

Putrajaya coach Brad Mika was tight-lipped on his plans for the final.

"We will not make many changes. Except for a few niggles, most of my boys are injury-free," said Mika.

Putrajaya have yet to win the title — their best was the semi-final effort in 2009.
