KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UniTen-KPT) are now just one point away from winning the Women's Malaysia Hockey League title (WMHL) after downing CS Hockey Team 6-0 today.
UniTen scored through Asfarina Isahyifiqa Isahhidun (16th), Siti Nur Arfah Nor (18th, 22nd), Nur Zafirah Nor Aziz (32nd, 35th) and Iren Hussin (51st) at Bukit Jalil.
It was UniTen's seventh win after nine matches and they now lead the standings with 23 points.
Negri Sembilan, who thrashed Mutiara Impian 12-0 at Bertam Stadium today, are second in the table with 20 points.
Negri and UniTen will face-off for the league title on Sunday at the Seremban Two Stadium. UniTen only need a draw to seal the deal, however, a defeat would see the title going to Negri as the latter have the better goals average.
UniTen coach Izzwan Salleh was pleased with his team's performance today but is aware of the bigger challenge that awaits them.
"Our objective today was to collect full points and take a step closer to the league title. My players did well to score the goals today but our crucial match will be against Negri on Sunday," said Izzwan.
"We can expect a torrid time from Negri who will be going all out to get the better of us in the match.
"We have a few days break before we face Negri and we will plan a strategy to beat them."
Meanwhile, Young Tigress squandered a 3-0 lead against Terengganu Ladies, allowing the latter to come back and secure a 3-3 draw today.
Nor Farida Sulaiman gave Young Tigresses the lead in the 12th minute before Nur Iman Adawiyah Suhaimi (25th) and Khairunnisa Ayuni Sharuddin (35th) made it 3-0 at Bukit Jalil.
But the East Coast side fought back with goals by Nur Atira Ismail (43rd, 58th) and Noor Asyiqin Syakirah Noor Hisham (44th) to level the match.
Young Tigresses are third in standings with 17 points and they will wrap up their fixtures against CS Hockey Team at Bukit Jalil. Terengganu are fourth with 11 points.
