ERC clinch Borneo Sevens double

KUALA LUMPUR: Hosts Eagles Rugby Club (ERC) had plenty to celebrate after both their men's and women's sides emerged victorious at the Borneo Sevens in Sandakan today.

The men's cup final witnessed Borneo Eagles edging Hong Kong China Dragons 17-12 to claim their seventh Borneo Sevens title.

Eagles captain Serupepeli Naqasima admitted it was a finely balanced encounter.

"If we made a mistake, they punished us. If they made a mistake, we punished them and we pushed the envelop until the final whistle," said Naqasima.

"We didn't have a lot of game time (ahead of competition). I salute the team's efforts both on and off the pitch."

Malaysian Universities finished third after downing Royal Town Warrior 15-10 in the playoff.

In the women's competition, Eagles NZ 7s became the first home team to win the title after downing Kazakhstan Rugby 22-10 in the final.

Borneo Sevens was making its comeback this year after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh attended the final day of the tournament today.
